from up at the top where we stood on the rocks
so sure of our spot in the sun

we walked between the apple trees
tracing the path on your grandfather’s map
but a treasure hunt’s not what it used to be
so we offered our thoughts about gossip and God
and the places we’d want to be from

we lived inside a movie scene
those nights by the lake, all the songs that we sang
but no one knew more than the melody
so the words we made up had to be good enough

summer was fading on the breeze

like a vision of what we’d become
